Previously on Chapter 5…Correlation and Causation

·        Since Correlation does not mean causation experimenters need to prevent the problems associated with interpreting correlational research

·        The way to do this is to have experimental control

A Review of Chapter 6:

Getting Things Under Control:

 Experimental Method

·        Experimental method means manipulation and control

·        Correlational studies: Investigator observes if variables have relationships

·        True Experiments: Investigator manipulates variable hypothesized to be the      cause and looks for hypothesized effect on another variable it removes the third-variable problem.

·        For this to happen investigators have to take apart naturally occurring relationships, and have to create a special environment to do this.

·        Random Assignment: eliminates selection bias because people are randomly Assigned to experimental groups by the investigator.
